School Wellness Champion Project
Make it Happen in your School
The School Wellness Champion project is the result of a collaboration between Montana Amateur Sports (Big Sky State Games) and the Healthy By Design Coalition. The aim of the project is to promote healthy lifestyle behaviors among middle and high school age students, with an emphasis on physical activity and nutrition.
Through a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana, a small team came together to create a School Wellness Champion Toolkit. This Toolkit has been designed for any middle school or high school staff member, not just health enhancement teachers. The toolkit includes a variety of resources including an assessment, action planning template, lesson plans, community resources, and parent handouts – all of which we hope will assist school-based wellness champions in promoting a culture of health within their schools. Topics include physical activity and nutrition primarily, but also include mindfulness and mental health, tobacco and substance abuse, access to health services, and ideas for wellness throughout the school.
School Wellness Champion Recognition Incentives – Limited Time
As part of the piloting of this toolkit, we are offering a limited number of incentives to school-based staff in Yellowstone County who request the toolkit, complete an initial assessment, successfully implement 3 activities from any of the aforementioned topic areas, and complete a feedback report in the following 6 or 12 months. Incentives include the following: 1) fitness set for classroom, 2) healthy cooking set for classroom, 3) mindfulness set for classroom, and/or 4) standing desk for School Wellness Champion. The incentive component will continue as long as supplies last.
