Billings Beets on the Streets

It’s a turnip. It’s a potato. No, it’s a sugar beet! Sugar beets are a key part of Billings’ history, where farm meets town. Just like sugar beets, Billings’ roots are hearty, industrial, and a little misunderstood. Billings Beets on the Street is a fun way to embrace this quirky root vegetable while exploring our city on foot.

Sugar beet statues will be “planted” in walkable areas throughout town each season. See if you can decipher the “hai-klues” (clues written in haikus) below and find them all before they’re harvested and planted in a new location!  The goal of this effort is to promote family-friendly physical activity and to create a sense of pride in Billings one step at a time.

This project is inspired by Mice on Main of Greenville, South Carolina and funded by Big Sky Economic Development’s Space2Place initiative.

Current locations are listed below.

All sugar beets will be visible outside a location or through a public window. Please do not dig or disrupt a location to find the sugar beet.

When you find a beet, please leave it rooted in its location for others to enjoy.
