Public Art Mapping in Yellowstone County
Mobilize the MAGIC City and Healthy By Design are partnering to bring more creative placemaking efforts to Yellowstone County. This collaboration will help map and inspire the placement of more local art, community gardens, and other neighborhood-driven projects that reflect the unique character of our communities. Creative placemaking uses the power of arts, culture, and local identity to shape vibrant public spaces where people want to live, work, and play. It’s more than murals or gardens — it’s about building pride, connection, and a true sense of belonging.
Why public art matters
Public art is original artwork that is visually or physically accessible to the public and does not require a fee or other prerequisite to enjoy. In a regional hub like Billings — serving nearly 600,000 people for healthcare, education, business, and recreation — public art plays a powerful role in shaping how we experience our city. It supports economic growth, fosters a sense of belonging, and contributes to community pride. From murals and sculptures to interactive installations, public art turns everyday spaces into vibrant places that reflect who we are and bring people together.
